Experiment Finished
Experiment Complete.
After a little over three months, my latest foray into the world of Linux has come to an end. That doesn't necessarily mean that anything didn't work—quite the opposite, in fact. Linux ran smoothly throughout, and I basically had everything I needed for my workflow.
In the end, it was really the sum of many small things:
- Despite trying every possible solution, I couldn't get Kubuntu to work properly with the sound chip built into my computer. Sometimes I had only stereo sound, sometimes 5.1 surround sound, and other times no sound at all. Unfortunately, that got really annoying over time.
- Image editing: I’d describe my relationship with GIMP as a love-hate one. GIMP does a lot of things well, and I was able to perform almost all standard editing tasks without any problems. If only it weren’t for that unspeakable interface. I know it’s all a matter of getting used to it, but anyone who’s seen the interface of, say, Affinity Photo probably knows what I mean….
- Darktable: It’s clearly top-notch as a RAW developer, which is why Darktable was one of the first programs I installed on Windows. However, I find its file management features rather mediocre. I really missed the file management capabilities of ACDSee. In my opinion, even Digikam can’t match them.
- For work, I have no choice but to use Windows 10. For me, getting used to it definitely played a role when I booted up my personal computer after work.
These were the main reasons why I decided to switch back to Windows for personal use as well, which brings my Linux experiment to an end.
I’m now running Windows 11 to my complete satisfaction.
Update October 2023: You always meet at least twice in life.... I’m currently giving Kubuntu another try.
Update November 2023: Unfortunately, this new fling with Linux didn’t last either.
2025/26: I’ve now finally switched to Linux (currently Mint).
